Grace, Grit & Giggles: The Mole-Sized Mission of Kim Schreuder–Horn

My name is Kim Schreuder – Horn, a legal professional by day, and by God’s grace, an author of five (at the moment) engaging children’s books about a Mole. These children’s books have been so well received worldwide, and through His grace and Wisdom, continue to be read in many countries.

As the creator of this utterly charming and endearing character, the Mole continues to surprise me, and inspire me, by his (often trying, and at times, amusing) journey of development, learning, discovery and growth. And of course, adventure. This delightful Mole has, without a doubt, come into his own.

I am an experienced and admitted Attorney of the High Court of the Republic of South Africa, with full rights of appearance and a Solicitor of England and Wales. I established the law firm, Schreuder Attorneys (schreuderattorneys.co.za), Sandton, 26 years ago, and I still actively practice law there, together with my dedicated and competent team, today. We have built up an enviable reputation for professionalism, legal expertise, guidance and trusted mentorship and I have been very fortunate to assist clients both nationally (within the Republic of South Africa) and internationally in a number of wide-ranging legal services.

My writing Journey:

Whilst during the day, I may be engaged in the serious business of law and legal complexities, it has been my writing journey that has taken me most by surprise. In 2020, and after a routine office clear-out of legal files, I came across writings that I had penned in 2003/4, at that time, a period of 17 years earlier. These writings contained a number of stories of a wonderful and inquisitive mole challenged and tested by learning, discovery or re-discovery and growth during life’s moments and lessons. Just as the mole discovered and learnt new things, so did I as a writer and creative children’s storyteller.

The Mole books involve the wonder and delight of discovery, learning and growth and are primary focused for early development/ early school development (ages 0-8 years) and later school development (ages 9-13years) in the latest novel with its comprehensive English language study guide.

About the Books

I am delighted to introduce 2 of these Mole children’s books, for the ACABA 2025 Nominees:
The Mole and the Sparrow, and The Mole and the Christmas Wish. They are rhyming and beautifully illustrated books to help children learn more about themselves and those around them.

Each book involves a story of adventure but develops important messages of learning, discovery and self-growth as well as important Christian values, such as acts of kindness and compassion in the book, The Mole and the Sparrow, and of self- belief, miracles and empowerment in the book, The Mole and the Christmas Wish. In the book, The Mole and the Sparrow, the Mole learns about the value of kindness and compassion towards others even when he is in pain himself as a result of eating too many bugs and grubs! In The Mole and the Christmas Wish, the Mole learns that he is just perfect the way he is, body parts and all, and despite his small size and stature, he saves one of the most important days of the year, Christmas Day.

This wonderful ACABA nomination cements recognition of all types of story-telling and the clear worth and importance of the writing and the continued journey of writing. Thank you for these nominations, I am humbled and grateful.
