Reading this book was an emotional and unforgettable experience. Walking through the author’s journey of losing both parents to illness, so suddenly and so close together, left me deeply moved. What stayed with me most was the strength, unity, and love he and his siblings showed during the hardest moments of their lives.
Their ability to turn grief into a meaningful legacy of philanthropy is truly inspiring. This book is a beautiful tribute to their parents and a reminder of the power of family, resilience, and honouring those we love.
This book was an inspiring read that shows the power of generational sacrifice. Harun and Perez’s dedication and values profoundly shaped their children’s lives, reminding us that we truly stand on the shoulders of giants.
The key takeaway for me is the importance of unity—through every season, whether joyful, challenging, uncertain, or ordinary.
More broadly, this story underscores the importance of documenting African family histories to allow the future generations to remain connected to their heritage.

Colours of Life by Achieng Okoth is a heartfelt reflection on love, family, and the deep impact of losing one’s parents. Through his honest and vulnerable storytelling, Okoth paints a vivid picture of how his parents’ guidance, values, and love shaped the foundation of their family. Their loss is felt deeply in every page, yet the book also celebrates their enduring presence in the lives they influenced. It’s a moving and relatable read that beautifully captures the strength of family and the lasting imprint of parental love.
‘’In life, everything is temporary—so, if things are going well, enjoy them because they won’t last forever. And if things are going badly, don’t worry. They won’t last forever either.” This philosophy seems to inform the author’s perspective on life.
“Colours of Life” is a captivating story that traces the life history of three generations, spanning centuries from Nyaduong village in Migori town, Kenya, to Nairobi, Marsabit, Mombasa, and finally to the resting place of the author’s parents—Nyaduong village. The family further branches out to the UK, USA, South Africa, and Germany.
Gibson Harun Ogutu and Perez Akinyi are determined to bring up their children in the most satisfactory way. In the process, they encounter several challenges, which they face, endure, and triumph over through a combination of factors: love, resilience, determination, and above all, faith in God.
The book highlights traditional and contemporary issues, including the role of parents in children’s upbringing, the sacrifices parents make for their family, conflicts between traditional requirements and the dynamic world, the role of women in a patriarchal society, and the challenges parents undergo in bringing up their children. The author uses rich language, flavored with local dialect, which gives the story authenticity and local flavor. Flashbacks, biblical allusions, and wise sayings all capture the reader’s imagination.
The language is simple, enhancing the readability of the story. The story culminates in the formation of HOPA (an acronym for Harun Ogutu and Perez Akinyi), named after their late parents, with the core objective of honoring them by supporting the education of orphaned and vulnerable children.
One of the aspects of “Colours of Life” is that it presents a balanced view of life, showcasing both the dark, gloomy, sad colors and the bright, radiant ones. I recommend that readers acquire and read the book. Will you see the glass as half-empty or half-full? The choice, ultimately, is yours.
Kevin shares his experiences growing up with such vulnerability. Letting us into their family setting, entrenched in Dholuo culture in a very unfiltered style. This ensured we gleaned more lessons covertly.
The resilience he draws from is so deep and long standing, even when life brought its own challenges. It is what I see him bring to corporate life.
Amazing to see how he has risen like the proverbial phoenix, which encourages me to keep moving. Knowing the God who allows seasons, also provides strength.
Authentic reflection of what life is.

One of the key lessons I took away is that unity is strength—that standing together as a family through both good and difficult times truly makes a difference. Through this story, the author reminds us that we are not alone in our challenges and that others can find comfort, encouragement, and valuable lessons from shared experiences.
This book is a beautiful and easy read that celebrates resilience, love, and the enduring power of family bonds.

The author carries you along, you feel like a part of the story. The story is authentic. With a balance of triumphs and trials. It truly brings out the title ‘the colors of life’ and the fact that there are some things that are beyond us, like sickness and death, but there are many others that are upto us, like loving, and gratitude, and staying positive. The HOPA Foundation created out of all the colors of the lives written about makes sure that they live, even though they are departed. Truly paying it forward and planting trees under whose shade the givers may never sit.
The book is well written and the author has done a fantastic job of carrying the reader along . The rawness of the emotions leads the reader to critically evaluate some core themes presented in the book. There are several lessons that can be derived from the colors of life. This book has led me to critically evaluate my faith, a process that has been elusive. A well written thought provoking read that helps you understand reasons the author is as grounded as he is
This book is so amazing, it’s all about family a true story how it started till the end. The Author has made it so easy to read and understand. A family with a humble beginning, how love, unity and hope keep them together. As one of the extended relatives raised up in this family, I am amazed by this story. Despite all the challenges that the family went through they still stood up strong hoping for a better future for the coming generation, Faith keeps them moving. There is a magnetic feeling about the story. At a point you stop reading just to reflect upon your own life journey as the themes are harmoniously positioned. I love the timelessness of the story in that it rings loud in the present and to sum up, i would say the book scores how to stand tall amidst challenges as it stamps a mark silently but permanently. It’s a must read book.
The emotions were raw…Almost tangible. A story of love, pain, belief and hope in the face of unimaginable grief. Quite a good read. Get yourself a copy and thank me later.
A very captivating personal life story that forces us to reflect on our own lives. An introduction to the family and their upbringing offers life lessons in every part of the family’s life journey. However, the biggest lessons are in how the family bonded together during the near simultaneous illness and demise of their parents and how those moments of anguish gave birth to a noble cause. It takes a lot of courage for one to share life’s triumphs and tragedies with the world and I would like to thank Kevin for the inspiring story.
Such an inspirational story, truly transformative and insightful, legacy built on hope and resilience bridging the gap of traditions and modernity. I loved how the family is portrayed and how unity can be one strong bond shifting a generations trajectory and empowering it to reach for the stars!! Nothing is impossible when bonds become unbreakable!! Such a great read!! You should definitely grab a copy.

Here, Achieng weaves a simple, yet profound story. A visceral trilogy of pain, trauma, and mortality, and its unwelcome descent upon a Kenyan family. One defined by sheer grit, positive ambition, even a lived-experience of typical suburban life. Yet, beyond pain the reader will appreciate the human condition and its ability to heal and overcome difficult moments. A marvellous read indeed!

A great story about how parents can shape generations to come through the choices they make! It really made me reflect and cherish the time I have with my parents!
I have come to know and love the HOPA family. This story is so inspiring and well written. I could not put it down and it left me wanting to know more about each family member. The faith and struggle of 2 parents to overcome and make life better for their children. Also the faith and struggle of the children as they walk the final days with their parents.
Colours of Life is a beautifully written story of the Kenyan Ogutu family in post-colonial Kenya during a period marked by transition from traditional to a more modern way of life, including all the stresses and opportunities that such a transition entails. The author’s parents prioritization of education for their children within the context of love and unity within the family has universal appeal. I highly recommend this enjoyable and uplifting read.

This book will keep you on the edge as you go through each page with nostalgia reliving life at its simplest setup surrounded by family, relatives and friends while striking a balance at life and the future.

Read it! You won’t regret it. Very insightful.
This deeply moving narrative chronicles the life of close family friends whose story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The book masterfully weaves together moment of joy, intense sorrow and triumph. At its core, it’s about determination and resilience- and relentless pursuit of dreams despite the odds that life presents. The narrative does not shy away from pain of loss, particularly the death of both parents within a short period of time. These passages are raw and honest, capturing the depth of grief while also honoring the beauty of memory and the strength found in community. I am most inspired by the generational transition- how values, stories and dreams are passed down, reshaped and carried forward. A must read for anyone seeking a story that is both personal and profoundly relatable.
A truly heartwarming tribute to the author’s parents, and in many ways to their generation of parents in Kenya that overcame significant odds for the sake of a better future for their children. I saw my grandmother in the persona and life story of Mama Perez. This book bears a tonne of wisdom in a short and pleasantly written format, I couldn’t put it down until I had read it all!
“Train up a child in a way he should grow, and when he is old,he will not depart from it “
I see it throughout the book.
The struggles and pain of daily life which are meant to break us,makes us strong in the long run.
I am still left thinking…What is life?
Very enjoyable and encouraging read about leaving a legacy for future generations! I did not want to put it down.
Having had the honour of serving as the Master of Ceremony during the launch of Colours of Life, I approached the book not only with curiosity but also with deep admiration for its author my good friend and former campus schoolmate, Kevin Achieng (Lapof). What I found within its pages, however, far exceeded the nostalgia of shared memories; it was a rich, introspective, and beautifully woven exploration of human experience.
Colours of Life is a vibrant reflection of the journey we all take through joy, loss, hope, and renewal. Kevin writes with the kind of authenticity that only comes from lived experience. Each chapter (or poem, depending on how one interprets his expressive rhythm) feels like a brushstroke, some bold and bright, others soft and shadowed, together painting a complete portrait of life’s complexity.
What stands out most is the author’s voice: honest, reflective, and disarmingly relatable. Lapof doesn’t seek perfection; he seeks truth. He captures the fleeting nature of moments — the ones that often go unnoticed! His storytelling flows effortlessly between vulnerability and strength, between laughter and introspection.
Beyond its literary merit, Colours of Life is a testament to the power of perspective — that life’s palette, though varied, finds its beauty in contrast. It is a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the quiet courage to express one’s journey openly.
For those who have ever paused to reflect on where they’ve been and where they’re going, the book offers a mirror, one that invites you not just to see, but to feel.
As someone who has watched Kevin evolve from our campus days to this moment of artistic expression, I couldn’t be prouder. Colours of Life isn’t just a book; it’s a legacy — a gift from one storyteller to the world.
This is a captivating tale of Family, true Grit and Hope, an authentic portrayal of the struggles and triumphs that come with transition. The power of a single life, a fleeting moment, can reverberate through the fabric of the universe, creating ripples that transcend time and space. In the face of chaos, these moments have the ability to ignite profound change, turning uncertainty and turmoil into the solid foundation of a future that is not only stronger but more enlightened.
It is in these quiet, transformative instants that the very course of history can shift, reminding us that even the smallest actions, when fueled by purpose and resolve, can reshape the world in ways we can scarcely imagine.
The true strength of the future often lies in the delicate moments that, though seemingly insignificant at the time, ultimately become the bedrock upon which a brighter tomorrow is built.
This book is a true reflection of how these transformative moments can shape not just one but generations to come. One hundred percent recommended reading this book for a real life changing experience
“The colours of life” by Achieng Okoth is a historical fiction novel published in 2025 by ZionPearl publishers, the authors explores a true story of Determination, Happiness, Pain, Hope & Generational Transition.
The novel follows the lives of Harun Ogutu and Perez Akinyi who are the main characters and their seven children as they navigate generational transition & generational impacts of their history in Kenya.
Okoth’s storytelling is sad and emotional. I loved how he potrayed a true story of his family which gave me a lot of hopes, also I liked how the family have unity even after the parents passed away.
The books messages about determination and hopes are still powerful, I like the authors style of writing, language translation and the books cover appearance is excellent. However, chapter twelve felt a bit long and more painful, also the font size of page (IV) is too small.
Overall, “The colours of life” is a moving and inspiring about hopes and determination. I would rate it 4.5/5 and I’d highly recommend it to anyone interested in African literature.
Beyond the warmth of family and the beauty of childhood memories, the book also confronts the harsh realities of life, the painful battles the family fought against cancer, and the grief that followed. Kevin writes with such tenderness and authenticity that you can feel both the joy and the sorrow intertwined in his words.
This is not just a story about loss, but about love, faith, and strength through adversity. The Colours of Life reminds us that even in life’s darkest moments, there are shades of hope and courage that give life its true meaning.

Kudos Author,Indeed it is a masterpiece…
I was most inspired by the Faith and prayerfulness of the Matriarch. The Author did an amazing job of painting a vivid picture of the family. The good and not so good moments that life brought their way& the true bond of love and care for one another.
A beautiful tapestry of resilience, love, and faith. Each chapter evokes familiar moments from our African upbringing, weaving a story that feels both personal and universal. The family’s ability to overcome the loss of their parents while staying united is a moving testament to strength and togetherness. A truly inspiring read.
The book, Colours of Life reveals the real meaning of life and what it entails. While human mind and desire might be confined to a particular path of life, it awakens the mind to the reality of life that, just like colours exist in shades, life is characterized by both happy and adverse moments and the interconnection of varied life experiences is what makes it complete.
This book depicts reality of life and the author brings out a personal family encounters to make the message reach home. Through varied themes weaved together in chronological flow of the events in his family, the author defines the meaning of life. Having come from the same community with the author, I can authoritatively say that I personally witnessed some of the family experiences that raised the emotions of the author to the unbearable levels. When I got to read them again in this book, I had a vivid refelection of these scenes and at some point, felt emotionally touched and moved by the author’s agony and sorrowful moments to the point of taking a break from reading and resuming some time later. At the same time, the author equally shares the exciting and enlightening family experiences that later lights up the low moods that are automatically triggered by the adverse life encounters.
The author has strategically mastered the art of balancing the two moods that makes the reader to remain anxious of the events that would ensue.
While this story reveals the authors family experiences as he connects to what defines a well-lived life, it is explicitly inevitable to distance yourself from the encounters in the book. At some point, you get engraved into the story, connect it with your own life experiences as you find it naturally resonating with what you have once gone through either directly or indirectly.
Indeed this is an AMAZING and A MUST READ! You cant afford missing to read it! I Highly Recommend it for You!

This book isn’t only captivating but also has lots of valuable lessons drawn from the experiences depicted by the author. Highly recommend this read!
Thank you for sharing your parents’ life with the world. Colors of Life is a sad but beautiful book. It is beautiful because your parents raised amazing children. They instilled in you and your siblings the discipline it takes to be movers and shakers in this world. True captains of industry. I was surprised to learn that your mum didn’t get a chance to go to high school and college and your dad was a security guard yet they raised children who are conquering the world. The story about mama Njeri and the one about the balls were hilarious and speaks to how much a disciplinarian your mum was.
The sadness in the chapter where you narrate how your were in South Africa and your parents were beginning to be critically sick is so heartbreaking. That chapter made me cry. The saving grace is how peaceful your mum passed on having bid all her children farewell. Then barely two months later your dad passed on. Their passing on truly resonates with 2 Timothy 4:7
