Man With The Lion Heart

To read this biography of Rev. Canon Apindi is to be challenged by his courage and selfless efforts to help his people and to preach to them the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He met opposition, discouragement, and was often in danger, but he refused to give up. This book goes forth with the prayer that God will use it to raise up those who will like Apindi, be prepared to venture for the sake of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  2. I have read about Apostle Paul and the other apostles in the Bible and how they faced shipwrecks and other scary encounters in their missionary Journey, but the experiences of Rev. Canon Ezekiel Apindi gave me goose Bumbs. in his life I see a man of unquenchable desire to bring light to his entire community, A man with a daring faith, A man of honesty and intelligence, A loving father, a selfless leader, a compassionate statesman and a great Preacher. I am truly inspired, totally illumined and fully persuaded that nothing can stop a Man who heeds to God’s call.
I am a Ghanaian Pastor with Assemblies of God denomination in Ghana. I had a desire to go back to my people in the northern part of Ghana where I come from to plant churches. while I prayed and waited on God, I had a dream. In the dream a certain man of God was preaching and asked me to look for a book titled ” Man with the lion’s heart”. when I woke up, I wondered if such title existed. So, I googled to see and behold I saw this book. I was amazed. I researched and finally found Rev. Apindi’s granddaughter Maureen who helped me out with the book. This can only be God. I know God has used this book to defeat my fears and to let me know that my impending assignment is possible. I see Rev Apindi as a great legend and will indeed love to travel to his hometown and pay my honor to him and his works. Though he is gone to be with the Lord, I believe strongly that God has connected me to his works for a good purpose. God bless all those you put this together.

    1. Romans 1:16-17
      [New King James Version]
For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one who believeth, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

The great (late) Canon lived these words.

Thank you Maureen for your efforts in ensuring his legacy isn’t forgotten

  19. Maureen, congratulations on bringing these phenomenal works back to life and giving them another chance to draw readers into stories of yesteryears. To inspire and to bring an awakening to the legacy that the book carries. An extremely powerful story on the life and times of Rev. Canon Apindi. An account of an adamant faith, the kind we know as the branch that is connected to the vine Jesus Christ bears fruit for many generations that follow. Stories of adventure and inquisitive pursuits, resilience and a dignified sense of purpose. It is definitely a captivating biography, one we could all draw motivation from. I look forward to the different ways this book can be adopted.
    God bless you.

  20. Do not hesitate to obtain a copy of this inspirational book about an amazing man who lived a very intentional life marked by service to God, his family, community and country at large. This biography forever immortalized him in the company of those rare beings who spend their entire lives working to elevate the lives of their fellow human beings and leave the world a much better place than they found it. I am greatly inspired by the late Reverend Apindi’s courage, faith, dedication and determination to bring his dreams into fruition despite the many challenges and obstacles he faced. Many thanks to Rev.

  22. An insightful journey into the work and life of missionary Rev Ezekiel Apindi as he overcame challenges to evangelise the gospel, build schools and raise the standards of education, and advocate for women and girls in Colonial Nyanza.

  23. I am a proud great grand daughter to Rev Canon Ezekiel Apindi. It is such a pleasure to belong to his lineage.

Special thanks to the author the late Rev Peter Indalo for writing this great piece, Mr Kwaku Bansah for ensuring the retrieval of the manuscript and my dear cousin Maureen for being part of the journey in making the book a reality once again.

  29. The book is a testimony to the journey of a young man who had a dream of developing his people through education, Christianity and hygiene. The foundation he laid was so strong. You find in most Anglican churches there is a school in the same compound and hospital in the neighborhood. He promoted education of the girl child and it is evident that today there are more girls schools than boys. Despite the many challenges he was faced with he never gave up. His determination was unstoppable. He put God first in all his undertakings and God was with him.Ths is a beautiful book I feel proud to be his grandchild.

  30. My dear Maureen, what a wonderful read, inspiring, hard to keep down yet not in a hurry to finish reading. Congratulations🎉 and all the best moving forward.

  31. Oh, what an honor to salute the works of great men, people who did all in their power in service of the Lord!
May we all be challenged to do the same in this day as we await the return of our King….soon.
    đź‘Ť Great job Maureen Babu.

  32. This book is truly inspiring. It taught me so much about humility and passion for the Lord’s work. My great-grandfather, Rev. Canon Ezekiel Apindi, sowed seeds that we are still harvesting today in the family, and in the communities he served. I am grateful to the late Rev. Peter Albert Indalo who immortalized his work and made it possible for us to know The Man With The Lion Heart.

  33. Great read. Amazing book, absolutely eye-opening and enlightening! Great history of church and education, girl child empowerment and what missionary work looked like I’m those days.

    1. Thank you Maureen once again for making sure that this book is put out there for all to read as it should be. It is a wonderful and inspirational book with many teachings. I too am happy to call Rev. Canon Ezekiel Apindi my great grandfather.

  34. Thank you Maureen for your efforts in bringing this book back to life. The book is truly inspiring and encouraging. I’m honored to be part of this great man’s lineage. It’s now up to us to carry on his vision in the best way we can.

Many thanks to Mr Kwaku Bansah and the late Rev. Peter Indalo.

  35. To all those who contributed to this testimony of a colossus; at 6.6 feet tall Rev. Canon Ezekiel Apindi must have scared the living daylight out of Carey Francis, the doyen of mathematicians. The two had an altercation on the Maseno School football pitch. Rev. Canon Apondi was an astute academician, a pillar of the Christian church, a political ground breaker and, a great colleague of Carey Francis.

Maureen; you and your mum (Grace Babu) are real dreamers and your dreams have come true with the digitalisation of this biography!!

This book is indeed a testimony to the journey of a young man who lived his dream to bring education and Christianity to his people, but also to bring political liberalization to the people of Kenya, as reflected in his speech to the Joint Select Committee the House of Commons (England) on 22nd April 2031. This meeting included representatives of the Kenyan Government, officials and white settlers. The meeting had been set up for the purpose of dealing with problems facing East Africa. Chief Mbiu Koinange, Mr. James Mutua and Rev. Ezekiel Apindi were called in to witness. The chairman asked whether there were some people among them who could speak English. Mr. Apindi responded that he understood English sufficiently well and that he did not need an interpreter. He proceeded to articulate the case in a most professional manner, true of a patriot.

Educating the girl child is something that Mr. Apindi endeared himself to; amongst the first beneficiaries were Mama Hellen Eunice Amondi the first Luo woman by ethnicity, to qualify as a teacher in the 1940’s and Mama Isabel Mor Obel, a long time head of the Kenya Girl Guides Association, were amongst the many girls who gained from Mr. Apindi’s noble cause.

The author; the late Rev. Peter Albert Indalo was definitely an astute student of Mwalimu Reuben Oyamo who later married Mama Hellen Eunice Amondi Oyamo. Mr. Oyamo, was also a pioneering teacher and evangelist.

Mrs. Christine Obinju later anchored the family and thus the realization of this book.

Dan Omondi Oyamo (Grandson to Mr. Apindi).

  36. What an educative piece on the cultural issues such as support for women and girls through advocating for the girl child education. I find it inspiring when I get to learn how religion has evolved overtime, and the different milestones achieved for the spread of the word of God, despite the challenges that stood on the way. I find this so encouraging.
    What a good read!

  37. I must first say that I am honored to call such a great man, my great grandfather. A brave man of many firsts. As one of the first missionaries in Western parts of Kenya, he shared the gospel with his community and beyond; started churches and schools (most of which are still some of the best performers to date); challenged the status quo on cultural issues that were not favourable to women and girls, for example; promoted girls education and built schools for them too;coined the Luo naming of days of the week; contributed to Kenya’s pre independence matters, among other notable achievements.

We are glad that his story has been documented and continues to be told. We remain grateful to the late Rev. Peter Indalo, who wrote this great piece and Mr. Kwaku Bansah who helped retrieve the manuscript in Ghana and digitalize it.

  38. This is beautiful, thank you Maureen for making this available online. There is a lot that one can learn from the life of this great man. I personally learnt a lot.

    1. A great start to great things. Couldn’t been so proud of you Maureen. Very interesting and inspiring book. Congrats.

  39. I am blessed to have received this book, it is an encouragement that as God’s children, we should not give up on our goals even when we receive resistance from different people. It is good to know that God is in control of our lives and moves side by side with us so we do not fall victims of the devil.

Thank you for the good job and continuing to pass on your great grandfather’s legacy years after he is gone. Wishing you all the best.

    Rebecca

  40. CONGRATULATIONS MAUREEN BABU FOR YOUR GREAT GRANDFATHER’S BOOK MAN WITH THE LION HEART WRITTEN BY PETER ALBERT INDALO. WE LOOK FORWARD TO GOD’S IMPACT TO READERS THROUGH YOU.

    1. The book “Man with the Lion Heart” written by Peter Indalo is arguably one of the greatest autobiographies of an African. The protagonist Rev Cannon Ezekiel Apindi deserves a standing ovation for giving his whole short life to the work of his community and for that matter his nation Kenya. At a time most educated Africans were drinking coffee with their European counterparts Cannon Apindi already knew that girl-child education was the thing that could push society out of its troubles. He therefore, rejected city life and lived in the forest regardless of dangers to his life and that of his family just to ensure that his kinsmen got educated and knew God No wonder that many years down the line a granddaughter of his was the one who decided to immortalise his work. I am proud of this African and for me the book, “The Man with the Lion Heart” deserves mention as the book of the century. The author Peter Ndalo and Maureen Babu who championed the resurrection of this work deserve applaus. Maureen must be commended for ensuring that this book gets back to the shelf. I hope the education authorities in Kenya will make the book available to students so they can learn the learn of how to sacrifice for one’s nation.
