My name is Gachery L, and I am deeply honored to be a nominee for the Award for Christian Authors.
Soko Short Stories is my debut book, inspired by a desire to empower children and reconnect generations through the art of storytelling. Growing up in an analog world that quickly transitioned into the digital age, I felt called to create something meaningful—something that bridges tradition and modernity.
The book features 16 short stories, each woven with moral teachings and rooted in African wisdom. Every story is paired with an African proverb that connects readers to our cultural heritage and concludes with a poem inspired by Christian values. To further bring each story to life, every tale includes a vibrant illustration that ties in elements of the marketplace—highlighting its role as a communal space full of culture, character, and connection.
This project was never part of my original plan. I had never considered becoming an author, but as I reflected on the growing disconnect between generations, I realized something needed to be done. Our society is slowly losing its cultural memory. Languages are fading, mother tongues are spoken less, and Swahili Sanifu is slowly disappearing from everyday life.
With Soko Short Stories, I wanted to revive the storytelling tradition of our forefathers—those beautiful evenings by the fireside, where wisdom was passed down through narrative. This book is a modern version of that tradition, offering a cultural and spiritual experience for today’s children. The title Soko, meaning “marketplace,” represents a place of gathering, exchange, and belonging. Through these stories, I invite readers into a vibrant marketplace of values, voices, and visions.
I’m grateful to be part of this incredible group and extend my heartfelt thanks to the African Christian Authors Book Award (ACABA) for this recognition as a nominee. Above all, I give glory to God. This book wouldn’t exist without Him. I began with neither the skillset nor the tools to write a book, but through His guidance, doors opened and the impossible became possible.
