Translation of the Year – ACABA Awards

Congratulations on Your Nomination!

Ifyou have received this link from CLC Kenya/ACABA on email or WhatsApp, we are thrilled to inform you that your book has been nominated for the prestigious Translation opportinity. We call it The Global Publisher’s Pick Award.

This recognition is an incredible milestone and evidence to the value and impact of your work.

This nomination opens the door to translation possibilities, with esteemed publishers from CLC Italy, CLC Colombia, CLC South Korea, and CLC France currently reviewing your book for translation in their respective languages.

Please note: Being nominated does not imply that your book has been awarded a translation contract. Rather, it signals that your book is under careful consideration by publishers in these countries. They are reviewing its relevance, message, and potential for impact in their language markets.

Translation Award Tiers and Recognition

Each participating country will select between one to three awardees, honouring authors with Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards. Here’s what each tier means:

Bronze Award (3rd Place): Acknowledges the book’s powerful message and its relevance. This recognition can be used by the author to pursue other translation opportunities and build credibility.

Silver Award (2nd Place): Highlights the book’s exceptional potential and reach. Like the Bronze award, this recognition can support the author’s efforts in pursuing further translation avenues.

Gold Award (1st Place): The highest honour in this nomination. The Gold awardee’s book will receive a translation contract in the respective language, making it available to a whole new audience!

What It Means to Be Awarded a Translation Contract

If you are selected as a Gold awardee and granted a translation contract, this award goes beyond recognition—it provides you with a unique opportunity to reach readers across language barriers.

Here’s what a translation contract with CLC entails:

  1. Translation and Publication Costs Covered: The translating publisher will handle all costs related to the translation and publication of your book.
  2. eBook Availability: Your book will initially be published in eBook format, making it accessible to readers in the target country.
  3. Potential for Print and Expanded Formats: If the book garners significant readership in its new language, it will be published in print and possibly other formats to increase its reach.
  4. Collaborative Opportunities: The translation process opens doors for joint webinars, seminars, and conferences, allowing you to connect with your new audience. The translating publisher will work closely with you to arrange these events as opportunities arise.
  5. Translation Rights: The translating publisher will hold exclusive rights to the translated edition. However, the original English version (or other existing editions) remains under the author’s and/or their publisher’s ownership.
  6. Royalties: As a Gold awardee, you will receive royalties ranging from 5-10% of the annual sales generated from your book in the target language. Royalties will be calculated annually, ensuring that you benefit from the ongoing success of your translated work.
  7. In the Event of Low or No Sales: If, after a set period, your book does not achieve significant sales in the target language, the translating publisher may decide to discontinue further investments in the project. This may mean limiting the book’s availability to digital-only formats or focusing on alternate distribution channels.

Authors should be aware that while the publisher commits to launching and promoting the book, the long-term viability of continued print production or further formats will depend on the book's market performance.

Submission and Rights Verification

By submitting your book for this award consideration, you are confirming that you have ownership of all rights to the book or have permission from your current publisher permitting translation rights to be transferred to the respective CLC publisher.

Books with unresolved rights claims or disputes—whether with publishers or co-authors—will be disqualified, and any awards granted under such circumstances will be recalled.

We commend you on your nomination and look forward to supporting the spread of your message to readers across language boundaries. Congratulations once again, and may this step be the beginning of a fruitful journey of cross-cultural impact!

Copyright Protection of Your Submitted Files

At CLC Kenya, we understand the importance of safeguarding your intellectual property. All files submitted for the Translation Award are handled with the utmost care to ensure copyright protection. Each participating publisher in Italy, Colombia, South Korea, and France adheres to strict protocols, preserving the confidentiality and integrity of your work. We are committed to ensuring that your manuscript and related materials are accessed only by authorized reviewers and team members involved in the nomination process.

As an added layer of security, all nominated authors will be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in December. This agreement is designed to formalize our commitment to protecting your content, outlining clear boundaries and guarantees for handling your files throughout the translation selection process.

Take the next step in safeguarding your work—be ready to sign the NDA in the coming month whether you are awarded or not! That's our promise to you to keep your files safe.
