From Excuses to Excellence: The Journey of Amon S. Bwengye and His Inspirational Book

My name is Bwengye Singahakye, also known as Amon S. Bwengye. I am the author of “HOW GREAT DREAMS DIE & WHY YOURS SHOULDN’T.” I am a born-again believer. I gave my life to the Lord in 2004. I am married to Brendah Bwengye, and together, we have 3 children: Elijah, Enoch, and Elaine.

I am a lead shepherd at Brook of Hope Church in Kisaasi, Kampala, Uganda. My writing journey started in 2016. The journey was inspired by the story of Gideon, a man highly called but greatly challenged by his many excuses. I identified with Gideon. I had so many important dreams to pursue, but I also had so many important excuses! The excuses were working as my comfort zones, pacifiers, and sponsors of uselessness.

Then I realized that the greatest, silent enemy to the pursuit of any noble dream is not Satan but a man’s excuses. So, I began to list the excuses that had stood in the way of my dreams. I also started researching the excuses that had stood in the way of other people’s dreams. I came up with 19 excuses. I began to study the lives of people who had beaten those excuses to do something meaningful. I picked the wisdom that helped them to defeat the excuses.

The journey of writing the first manuscript took me about 6 months. It was under the title: “How to Maximize Your Productivity.” As I read through the manuscript, I realized it was far from what I wanted it to be. So, I kept researching and adding in substance, changing titles, and making other adjustments. When I first started writing, I thought I would be done with the book in just a few weeks! However, the process took me 5 years. I created about 30 editions before I released the final product!

At many different points, I felt discouraged and wanted to give up. I would tell myself that I was not going to change anything again, but I would breach my own promise! I would go back to see how to make the book better. My wife used to encourage me at first, but she reached a place where she didn’t want to hear about the book anymore. Many friends kept telling me to release the book, but I would still feel that there was something I needed to add, subtract, or improve.

Then in 2022, I felt that I could release the book. I printed 400 copies. My friends encouraged me to organize a book launch. The launch was successful with more than 100 guests in attendance. We sold several copies at the launch. Eventually, we sold other copies. All the copies of the book are now sold, and there is a high demand for it. We are making arrangements to print bigger volumes. The feedback from the readers has been very encouraging.

Several people have been challenged to leave the comfort of their excuses and reach out for their dreams. Hearing these stories is the greatest pay an author can receive. God has used the little book to push men into the arena of action. May God use it more to rescue dreams and potential from the graveyard of excuses.
