Samuel Otieno’s Writing Journey

As I was tracing my way, I passed by a GK vehicle, the main occupant was a distant cousin to my mother. He called me and asked what I was up to, now that i had cleared secondary school. I replied to say that I was just at home. He told me to ask my mother to go to him on the same day. At the end of the day, I was on my way to Kakamega then I was posted to Busia. I wanted to write this story and got started…. It could have come out as a secular story. On a second thought I kept the draft and instead started thinking seriously about writing spiritual experiences rather than secular stories. I thought of my journey from a humble background to what defined my life for the 40 years I served in the government. I did retire on June 30th 2021.

My mother urged me to write on spiritual matters. It took me several years to do so. My mother is since gone to be with the Lord come many years ago. Here I started writing a book on “spiritual legacy” and forgot along the way and could not proceed. I decided to start writing a book which I initially entitled Midlife Crisis: then materials for the first book Spiritual Legacy came vividly in my mind. I have traced this message of Spiritual Legacy from Eden where Adam cherished to have God fearing children. He said, God has given me a son Seth in place of Abel (Genesis 5: 25 – 26). This verse formed the core part of my late mother’s inspiration;

Publishing is an art. A delicate art, like the music artist who sings to pass a message. I have learnt that each song is unique, and is produced irrespective of those who sung in the past. I also learnt from the birds! Each bird has its unique melody in praise of the creator. I picked from these scenarios and decided to bring my spiritual inspiration in relation to the happenings of life into public domain, by writing and sharing widely with a hope to touch hearts with the inspired word. Along the way it has been challenging to find time to put this into perspective. First, some brilliant ideas disappear if they are not put down on paper. I am currently putting my act together, which is challenging because I find myself in the middle of nowhere! I have to struggle a bit to coordinate myself, but i am undeterred.

I want to put the best foot forward irrespective of the challenges. One last challenge is in the finances for printing. I have several manuscripts ready for printing to no avail. Otherwise publishing is the most exciting art among others more so the Christian writing which i am privileged to participate in. The spirit of God is at hand to lead and I have enjoyed the prompting. Sometimes I wake up in the night to write down the streaming ideas from the spirit of God. Writing requires creativity. Its not easy without t.he spirit of God, that is my experience . I want to write and write till my sunset years. In Jesus name Amen
