This was not her life’s ambition
Like other women in Israel she had wanted to be so much more
She had dreams and plans, but look at her now
She was the object of judgement for an angry Pharisaic mob
“But where were they taking her?” She wondered
She expected to be led out of the city, where the lawbreakers were stoned
Either way she was going to die today
Today she was going down.
He saw them a far off, their thoughts were obvious to him
They did not need to utter a word
The countenance of their faces overflowing with unbridled wrath
They were out for blood, her blood
He saw her too, a woman, wayward in her ways
A soul corrupted by sin, a lost sheep
His heart was moved, this was why he came
This was why he came down.
They made her stand in their midst,
A spectacle, an example, a lesson, bait
Court was in session, she was the accused,
Her accusers with her and he was the judge
This to her was just a formality
The law of Moses was cast in stone by God Himself
The die was cast, she had made her bed,
It was no one’s fault, she deserved it
She had let herself down.
The accusers stated their case, short, concise and true
The accused quiet and hopeless
He knew their hearts
She was not their target, he was
They had laid a snare for Him
He would only ask them one question
After which he stooped down.
She did not expect this
They came to accuse her but his truth accused them
They used the law against her
But they discovered it was double edged
They started leaving, he continued writing
One by one until they were all gone
He looked at her and they had a brief conversation
She then left the courtroom not condemned
What had just happened?
They sought judgement she found mercy
She left the scene with her head lifted up not down.
As she left He knew this was just one among the many
He had come to save the lost and the work was not yet done
The path ahead of him would lead Him to the same accusers
There would be pain, there would be blood
There would be a cross, there would be death
For their sake, for the captives
It was not yet over, the path to their redemption
would lead Him further down.
