I began writing in 2010 while in high school. I was so interested in self-help books, because of the flair with which the authors of motivational titles carried themselves, they were also the writers I had first interacted with. It is no wonder then that my first book – Recipe for Success – was a motivational book, inspired by Pepe Minambo of Congo, and Dr. Wale Akinyemi of Nigeria. Later on, I joined college and began writing for the Standard Newspapers, and later the Daily Nation.
Since I was undertaking a Mathematics based degree, and having worked as a Math teacher after high school, I decided to write two books titled ‘Spotlight on Mathematics’, and ‘Math Made Easy’, which were Math revision books for the upper and lower primary grades. 2
As time went by, and in my writing for the newspapers, I interacted with so many people, and heard of so many issues that they faced. Some were so shocking to me. The dramatic change in the status of affairs, the workplace, and traditional cultural roles has left a significant number of people confused, disillusioned, angry, frustrated, and traumatized.
Consequently, there has been denial, ignorance, isolation, anger, resistance, and resentment. These reactions cause serious effects on the environment in which the change is taking place. The result can be oppression, suppression, violence, and the spirit of control. That is how the writing of the GRACIOUS GOD, I PRAY began. I believe that as a writer, our works are a reflection of the society we live in.
The impact of the confusion on the family and society is so frightening. Many women suffer the violence of angry men. Children are victims of abuse and resentment, and society bears the scars of social deterioration. Governments are helpless to respond to this phenomenon. They find their ideas, laws, and social programs ineffective in addressing it. What should one then do? How will the society be healed?
In one of the night Bible readings, I came across this verse in the Bible: If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
I found the inspiration in the assurance of God that to Him, there is nothing new, nothing more complicated that He cannot solve. God can actually solve everything. That meant that all the answers that people are looking for can be found in the Bible – His word – which He promised never to renege on. I set out to study it so that for every challenge or issue that faced me, or anyone in my society, I could point it to God’s word.
I figured that even lawyers in court, do quote sections of the law where they premise their arguments, which cannot be opposed. By such law-based arguments, they win cases. I was convinced that by making prayers while quoting the Lord’s word and assurances, He will surely respond to us.
