My name is K.A. Mulenga, a Zambian children’s author based in South Africa. I’m humbled and excited that two of my books — David the Great King and Robbie the Raven and Debbie the Dove — have been nominated for the African Christian Authors Book Awards.
I wrote my very first story, Donk and the Stubborn Donkeys, at the age of 10 — and published it 35 years later! That experience reawakened a deep passion God had planted in me long ago. Since then, I’ve written over 40 children’s books, many rooted in Christian values.
My love for reading and writing was inspired by my late father, Kelvin Goodwin Mulenga , who was the first Black editor of the Zambia Daily Mail. Because of him, there was a beautiful and rich reading culture in our home. Newspapers, books, and meaningful conversations were part of our daily life. His legacy continues to inspire me, and I carry his love for words and truth into every story I write.
As a devout Catholic, my faith is central to everything I write. I truly believe that stories can be a powerful tool to teach children about God’s love, grace, and purpose for their lives. I aim to write books that entertain and plant seeds of faith, hope, and identity in Christ.
None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of my family.
-My amazing wife Sheba is my rock and greatest encourager.
-My children Grace, Malaika and Kalenga Jr inspire many of my stories — seeing the world through their eyes constantly reminds me why I do what I do.
– My mum, who has been both a mother and father to me as my father passed away when I was 7 years old and she never remarried. She has always believed in me.
– My brother ( Clement) and my two older sisters( Priscilla and Bertha) have also been a source of strength, love, and motivation throughout my journey.
My late brother who was also a poet passed away at the tender age of 27 was also an inspiration to me
About David the Great King
I’ve always admired David from the Bible. What touches me most is how God chose him — the least expected, the youngest, a simple shepherd — and raised him up to become a king. Not because he was perfect, but because his heart was after God.
In David the Great King, I wanted to capture this powerful message for children: that God sees beyond the surface and can use anyone who is willing to follow Him. It’s a story of bravery, humility, and God’s faithfulness.
About Robbie the Raven and Debbie the Dove
This book brings a fresh, imaginative twist to the story of Noah’s Ark, told from the perspectives of the two birds sent to explore the world after the flood. Robbie the raven is bold and adventurous, while Debbie the dove is gentle and obedient.
What I love about this story is that it teaches children that God uses different personalities and gifts for His purpose — and that obedience and peace often carry more power than noise and haste. It’s a beautiful reflection of God’s intentional design in each of us.
