My name is Erastus Muthura. I am a career banker, a trainer, a conference speaker, and an author of two books. I am passionate about life skills and I speak, teach and mentor on basic life skills in line with personal financial management, personalities, relationship management, parenting among others.
My first book, Guard Hour Heart P*ssw*rd., shares practical ways through which we should guard the 4 gates to our lives by deciding not to allow negative energy to find it’s way into our lives, which can only be done by having a heart password. This is an inspirational book whose teachings are based on scriptures (Prov 4:23).
My second and latest book, titled ‘The 7Ms of Money$hip, talks about 7 pillars of personal financial management with an emphasis on how we should manage the relationship between ourselves and money, hence the term ‘Money$hip’ which is my own coining.
Banking gives me an opportunity to interact with businesses and individuals across different sectors in different geographies. Through my interactions and experience in the industry, I was able to pick the challenges and struggles that people go through regarding money management and started sharing knowledge and training on the same. After almost all the training sessions, a lot of people in the audience would ask for the notes/ my presentation. I decided to put it in a book so that it can impact more people. The book is written in a very simplified yet impactful manner and is aligned to our daily behavior, decisions and choices where money is concerned. The simplicity was deliberate so that the book doesn’t sound academic and theoretical or another lesson on business studies.
I facilitate training and teaching to different groups because that is where my passion lies. Sometimes, I combine/ climax my sessions with a song because I am talented in music and can play both guitar and piano.
My writing journey started by speaking (which I do better than writing) and for the longest, I had never considered myself as a writer. I only wrote when it was unavoidable, especially while using a pen. That tells you that I admire fast writers and I envy those with a good handwriting.
I have been in church leadership and ministry since my school days both in pastoral and music work and all activities to do with church. Coupled with a very demanding job and family responsibilities, I am left with night hours to do my writing and reading and this makes me take a lot of time than I think I should. I am also in school and I have to do my research work at the same time.
My first book was more or less a collection of my sermons which were in audio form. Again, because of my tight schedules, I opted to get a transcriber to do the book for me by listening to my audios. What came out of that sounded very different from what I thought it should. I couldn’t hear my voice in the book. I had to redo the writing by myself and sought guidance all the way to publishing. I thought I would never do another book and that was enough to ensure that my work would outlive me, until I started talking about money and another book’s journey started.
My second journey was different. I worked with a professional who walked with me all through from editing the book and giving me feedback on every aspect for the book. She also helped me with advisory regarding different stakeholders and was always on my neck regarding timeliness which really helped.
However, upon receiving my printed books, I started realizing a number of issues on the cleanliness of the some pages like overlaps, faint print, rough edges etc. The printer had given me extra copies to take care of the errors and promised to replace the spoilt copies. This means that I had to go through all the 1,000 books page by page to ensure that my readers get the best quality.
The second challenge was when I wanted to have the book uploaded on Amazon. My designer and the person to do the actual upload duplicated their effort because of communication breakdown and both invoiced me twice for the same work. Both of them did an e-pub. I decided to pay both of them but either way, a good job was done despite lack of clarity on the scope. I would still use them again but ensure that the technical jargon doesn’t become a liability. I learnt my lesson.
