Esther Katende Authors Her Second Book Despite Lingering Doubt

My name is Esther Katende Magezi. My main day to day job is mothering 3 of our children (16, 14 & 11), a wife to one nice guy, and in my free time, I’m an international trade lawyer and law lecturer. So far I have authored two books, one on parenting called ‘Decision Points: Memoirs of a working mother’ and another on marriage called ’15 things they didn’t teach us about marriage’.

My desire for writing my first book was to talk about my journey as a mother, to show my children and the world how important it is to raise children intentionally.

The book therefore is a discussion on intentional parenting. It revolves around the decision points I made, as I intentionally raised my children between the ages of 0 – 12 years. I openly share my memoirs on my parenting journey; the highs and the lows, as well as the challenges I have gone through as a working mother and how I overcame them.

As an author of Memoirs of a Working Mother, I joined ACABA and CLC and participated in the nominees activities. This was last year. First of all, I was excited that I had become an author and had “arrived”. Until I started reading the writing journeys of the ACABA authors on a Nominees forum like this one. People talked of being on their 4th, 7th and even 10th book! Wow… I was challenged!

I had been keen on writing a book on marriage, but felt I was not competent enough, having been married for 17 years only.

In one of the Monday devotions, the ACABA team posted a message on the Nominees forum, that post gave me the courage to write my second book, for which I have been nominated this year. This book is about the 15 things I have learned about marriage in the 17 plus years I have been married. They are lessons I have learned from the marriages and divorces of friends and family, lessons taught to me by God, and the different marriage seminars and meetings I have attended.

They don’t teach about marriage in school, and the person you marry and the way you navigate the institution of marriage, is one of the greatest sources of joy or pain in life! This book is a good read and has valuable lessons for those intending to get married, those who have started on the journey of courtship, those who are married, and those who don’t intend to get married.

It is a practical and unplugged discussion of marriage, without any sugarcoats. It is a collection of insights into this institution called marriage, that has eluded many of us, primarily because, among other reasons, they don’t teach us about marriage in school!
