Aba Geker Drew Inspiration From Her Teacher, Husband And Father

My name is Aba Geker, I come from the West African country, Ghana. I have been happily married for 16 years and blessed with three sons.

My Father, a retired Professor is a writer of many books. I believe I was somewhat inspired by his success in writing so I decided to give it a shot.
In secondary school, my English teacher gave the class an assignment to write a short story. I studiously took up the task and wrote to the best of my ability. When the assignment was marked, the teacher wrote a comment that thrilled me. She wrote, ” A story full of good suspense!”
Her comment changed my perspective myself and I suddenly gained some confidence in my writing skills. Deep down I felt I may have a gift to write so I decided to put this to practice some time in the future.
When I completed secondary school and during a brief waiting period before my entry into the University of Ghana, I decided to write a book at the age of 19. I hand wrote a novel in a notebook and felt I had accomplished a great feat. Although I didn’t have it published, just the thought of having completed a book gave me a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Fast forward two years later in the year 2002, I made friends with a wonderful scriptwriter by name Yao, with whom i shared my hand written book to review. To my amazement, he was so thorough with the review,  raised so many questions and revealed so many flaws with my writing that suddenly dampened my zeal for writing.  I suddenly felt I was not gifted anymore.
I decided to put my writing away and concentrate with my studies in the University. I was however very grateful for his review because he threw a lot of light on my strengths and weaknesses. Yao and I remained good friends until we decided to take our relationship to the next level and eventually married about 5 years later.
In the year 2016, I felt a sudden urge to put a novel together. I had always been passionate about the youth and participated fully in all youth activities in the church. I decided to write up a story depicting the average Christian teenager and the life choices they make that lead to sinful activities. Even the most pious looking Christian struggles with temptations everyday.
It took about a year to complete the story and i gave the manuscript to my Father (a successful writer),  and my to husband Yao to read and review. The waiting period was filled with anxiety; i wondered what they thought about the book especially since both my husband and Dad are meticulous critics. Yao, my husband, was the first to complete the book. I remember he sent me a text message while I was at work one day and the only words he wrote were “Wow! Wow! Wow!” Initially I was confused about what he was talking about. I replied with the words; “Sweetie, what are you excited about?” He later revealed that my story was wonderful. I was so excited. He gave me a few tips to improve the story outline which I willingly incorporated into the book.
Then came my Fathers review; ” The book is well written. It’s a good story!!” I was so elated by his comments but I composed myself and welcomed his compliments with a warm smile. “Thank you” I responded.
My Strong Tower; the Genesis, my very first published book, was birthed in 2019 through these narrated life experiences. It is a Christian literature series for teenagers and young adults. The sequels to this book will follow suit soon with God being my helper.

Wow. Very impressive of how you developed a passion for writing at an early age and you had your English teacher and dad to motivate you. I love that you God led you to a man who not only became the love of your life, but also enabled you to be the best writer. Your story is encouraging.
