My Journey as a Writer – Joshua Beti

I am a Christian, and I love God. I am married to Claris Beti; we are blessed with one son, Nathaniel Beti. I am an author, song writer, worship leader and a minister of the Gospel. Currently, I work and serve as a Ministry Assistant with the Highway of Holiness Ministries Intl.

My journey as a writer began way back in the year 2003. I was part of my Church’s Sunday school and did task myself to script write and direct two skits for Christmas celebrations. Both plays came out so wonderful than I had really expected. This gave me the boldness to do it again in the year 2004, However, I never gave this much attention- I think because this was due to lack of morale and motivation from my then village setting. I had very little information and exposure as to what one’s talents and gifts could do. So I never gave attention to my talent of writing and instead concentrated on other things that I felt were more important. Deep within me though, I realized a strong, creative and imaginative power in my school English and Swahili story compositions that amazed me; I couldn’t believe that I was that creative. I ignored these instincts. At some point, while still in my primary school I thought of writing a Swahili novel, this was after reading Ken Walibora’s novel, ‘Siku Njema’. At another point I wanted to write a novel about Money. I had the title of the book; ‘Money Speaks’, I let the idea go.

In the year 2010, the writer in me awakened again. I remember writing two play scripts, both were African movies- one about Church and social life, the other was political. The latter was inspired by the aftermath of the 2007 general elections in Kenya, and the brainwashing that was going on in my locality, Kakamega County. However, this time again, I stopped at those two, though I documented the scripts until now. I also began song writing, and wrote many songs while playing my guitar and Piano. In my first year in college, the poet in me came out. I wrote so many inspirational poems and articles. This is something I had never done before. In my third year of college, I began doing spoken word, and many more songs without a struggle. This was when I discovered my purpose in life- it dawned on me of my identity in God, and for what reason he created me. I realized that my gifts and talents were God’s investment in my life, to help me serve his purpose on earth for his glory. However, up to this point, I had never given thought to writing a book, but had compiled so many articles and poetry, which I intended to publish someday.

It was a few months after my university education, that I wrote my first book, Kingdom Enforcers. The idea of the book came while I was sharing with my cousin about my bible study. I was so excited with the revelations I was getting from the Bible. It was in the midst of our conversation, when it dawned on me that this could actually translate into a book. I did not waste time. I spent every free time I had and the nights to write this book. One revelation led to another, precept upon precept, brick upon brick. It was so exciting and couldn’t wait to finish the book. Within a span of about three months, I had completed the book. However, I am yet to publish it in hard copy. I had an eBook version of it on Amazon, but then pulled it down. I think the most appropriate time for its publishing will be next year. Immediately after I was done with my first book, I began working on the second book, ‘Destiny Achievers- Driven by Purpose.’ I finished writing this book in early 2016, making this my first publication this year.

In the process of writing the Destiny Achievers book, I realized the importance of noting down every creative thought that comes to mind. Most of the times if you meet me, you will find me with a note book and a pen. I get inspirations from nature, people, buildings, animals, etc. Many of the articles I wrote while in campus found relevance in this book. It was just a matter of putting the different ideas together, I thank God i documented them. This book is an inspiration to me personally. Whenever I feel discouraged by events of life, I get a hold of it and read from page to page. Hope awakens!!! I believe this book is a game changer for my generation.

To date, I have written four books, looking forward to launch another book in a months’ time. This book is more about the lifestyle of a worshipper and prophetic music. The writings are drawn from my experiences and encounters with God as a Christian, and as a worship leader. All my other books a part from this one, majorly dwell on matters purpose and destiny. They are poetic, inspirational and heart awakening scripts meant to provoke readers to relentlessly pursue their purpose in God. This will guarantee them destiny. I believe every man, family, people group and nations have redemptive destines in God. They have to discover their purpose, and thereafter seek to serve God and man in their time; hence must push through every thick and thin with the help of God to see his kingdom come and his will done in their lives here on earth as it is in heaven. It will not be easy, but with God everything is possible. In a span of five years, I have written five books and i am currently writing a sixth one.

I must also say, that I have missed on opportunities to write many more other books. This has been majorly due to procrastination. About my song writing- I have only produced one song, titled ‘You’re Lifted Up.’ You can get it on YouTube. Am working on having my first album before the year ends. I really thank God for trusting me with this gifts and talents, and look forward to being a great blessing to my generation. I must say that publishing was a great challenge to me due to the high costs in most trusted publishing houses. I thank God that i discovered Self-Publishing. I did register a business name with the Government of Kenya as ‘EDEN IMAGE PUBLISHING HOUSE, and also registered with the Kenya Library as a publisher. I did outsource proof readers, editors, cover designer, and an interior book designer. This made my work easy, and I believe one day I will be a full-fledged, established publisher.

A big thank you to the ACABA fraternity for giving me and many others a rare privilege and an awesome opportunity for our work to be recognized. I am so glad to be on this platform; it is a blessing. God will surely reward your obedience.

To my fellow authors,

With God, all things are possible,
Destiny is possible.
Never say, “I can’t make it.”
Champions never quit.
You,
You will be celebrated.
Your dream is true;
It is valid, and it is authentic.
Life is a blessing;
Yet a privilege and a miracle.
Seize the moment;
Seize the opportunity.
Shake off every shackle-
Life must count.
Yes,
Life must count a plus.
You,
You will make it,
I know it,
I can see it,
And I believe it.
Your dream is true-
Go, go, go …
Now is your time!
