My name is Paul Wangari, a counseling psychologist, a corporate speaker, trainer and team leader at Shaping Destinies consultancy.
Being an author? me? No way. It was a farfetched dream. Writing my own name was an uphill task.
Picture this, I was born by a single mum who passed on when I was only 9 years, leaving me in the hands of my grandmother, she also died 2 years later. I was rejected by my kin and taken to a Children’s home.
Unfortunately just like a bad dream, the home collapsed and I had to scavenge of rotten foods on the street.
A good Samaritan rescued me from the Jaws of death. She adopted me and gave me a reason to live and believe I could be somebody. I was given a chance at education which I knew would rescue me from a hard life making me devote myself fully to learning.
I broke a record in my family of origin, I became the first child ever to sit the KCPE, KCSE and proceed to graduate from the University. (Nani kama Mungu!)
Seeing what education could do to a person, i fell in love with books so much so I wrote my first book ‘Time Management For Winning Grades’ while in form 2. Much later, I published second book ‘Going Beyond Excuses’ where I shared my journey then third book ‘Sex & Teenagers’. It has been a fascinating experience giving hope through my books and sharing wisdom nuggets.
‘Becoming A Man’, you will agree with me is tough especially for a boychild who has faced what I experienced when growing up. It hasn’t been easy for me either.
For the longest time now, the boy-child has been under siege – lacking empowerment, being forgotten, neglected and ignored in various aspects. In fact, the plight of the boy-child has been depicted as doom and gloom! As a result, the boy-child is 10 times more likely to go to prison than the girl-child. Drugs and crimes are at an alarming rate among the boy-child. This means that the boy-child is likely to languish in poverty, suffer depression and commit suicide.
Fortunately, the cure is found in my fourth book which I have co-authored it with my childhood friend Mr. Kagondu jnr, ‘BECOMING A MAN’!
This book is an encyclopedia for very boychild / man. We take the boychild through a journey towards Becoming a Man, a journey of self discovery through the developmental stages of a man.
Majority of boys are lost mainly because of the absence of fathers who should be a source of identity and direction to them. Among many other issues affecting boychild, we have articulated them in this book.
‘Becoming A Man’ is a unique book because we have blended psychology, Christianity, the african culture and sociology, in a holistic approach to moulding the boychild to becoming a man.
