I wrote Sculpted By Design as the first of four volumes on the History of Uganda. I had an opportunity to have my children homeschooled with a Christian curriculum and found that there was a big disconnect with how they were introduced to History and how I was taught in school.
Later, my sister in law (this story is in the book) took me to visit the BCA (Black Cultural Archives) in Brixton, UK and during an exhibition about Black women in England, I realized how much of my own history was hidden from me. I set about rewriting History. So Sculpted By Design is written so that every African child can see themselves in God’s story of Creation.
The Bible doesn’t mention what color Adam was but it does mention that he was the first man. So irrespective of all folklore, mythology and all other tales, we as Ugandans are all descendants of Adam. It’s taken me about 5 yrs of reading and watching loads of History to get to just volume 1. Because at some point, I didn’t even feel like an Authority. I don’t have an MA in Theology or History. Just I love Africa and I love Jesus and that eventually was enough.
I don’t know if many authors face the ‘who should be my editor’ conundrum? I didn’t want the book to read like a History textbook, and most editors would treat it that way. So I dropped that line. My husband is also a published author, but in taxation. His book has like over 600 pages. I had watched him write and edit it by himself and to date, other than opinions in law and practice, no error has been pointed out. So long and short, he was my copy editor. My son, Benjamin was home during lockdown so he designed the book cover.
