Carol Charles is a devoted Christian, wife, mother of three, teacher, minister, and passionate mentor of teenagers. She serves as an associate pastor at PEFA Kasarani Jubilee Cathedral and is the founder of Kings and Queens Shapers, a ministry dedicated to helping teenagers discover their purpose, identity, and God-given potential.

The inspiration to write this book came from a deep burden I have carried for teenagers and their parents. Having gone through my own teenage years and experienced some of the challenges that come with that stage of life, I understand that adolescence is a very important and sensitive season.
Over the years, my interaction with teenagers and their parents as a teacher, pastor, lecturer, and youth mentor has exposed me to many of the struggles that young people face today. Teenagers are growing up in a very different world from the one their parents experienced. They are being influenced by social media, peer pressure, changing cultural values, technology, and many other voices that compete for their attention and identity.
At the same time, I have observed that many parents genuinely desire to raise godly children but sometimes struggle to understand how to effectively parent teenagers in today’s rapidly changing world. This created a burden in my heart to provide parents with practical and biblical guidance.
I felt that God was calling me to share a message of hope and encouragement with parents: it is still possible to raise godly teenagers in the 21st century, but it requires intentional parenting, spiritual guidance, open communication, prayer, and a strong biblical foundation.
This book is therefore a response to that burden. It is my desire to help parents become more intentional and effective in guiding their teenagers to know God, understand their identity in Christ, make wise choices, and live out their faith in a challenging world.
The heart of my book is that parenting teenagers in the 21st century requires intentionality, biblical wisdom, understanding, and active involvement.
Parents cannot afford to leave the spiritual and moral formation of their teenagers to chance or to the influence of the world. The teenage years are a critical season of identity formation, decision-making, and spiritual development. Parents have a significant role to play in helping their teenagers navigate this season successfully.
I want parents to understand that parenting is more than providing physical needs. It is also about discipling, modelling, listening, communicating, correcting, encouraging, praying, and creating an environment where teenagers can grow in their relationship with God.
I hope readers will remember that raising a godly teenager is a journey, not an event. Parents do not have to be perfect, but they must be present, intentional, prayerful, and willing to grow alongside their children.
Above all, I hope parents will remember that God has entrusted them with the responsibility of nurturing the next generation, and with God’s grace, wisdom, and guidance, they can make a lasting spiritual impact on the lives of their teenagers.
Yes. One of the things that impacted me most while writing the book was reflecting on navigating the barriers to parenting teenagers.
Writing this book challenged me to look at the teenage years not simply as a difficult stage that parents have to survive, but as a strategic season of opportunity. Teenagers are developing their identity and asking important questions about life, faith, relationships, and their future. They need parents who will walk with them rather than simply talk at them.
I was particularly impacted by the realisation that many behaviours that parents find difficult to understand may sometimes be connected to deeper needs for acceptance, identity, belonging, guidance, or affirmation. This reminded me of the importance of listening to teenagers and creating safe spaces where they can express themselves while still being guided by biblical truth.
The writing process also made me reflect on my own teenage experiences and the lessons I learned along the way. It reminded me that every generation faces unique challenges, but God’s Word remains relevant and provides timeless principles for navigating life.
This strengthened my desire to see parents and teenagers build healthy relationships where truth and grace work together, where parents can lovingly provide boundaries while also listening, understanding, encouraging, and walking alongside their teenagers.
Writing this book deepened my dependence on God. It reminded me that parenting is not a responsibility that can be fulfilled through human wisdom alone. Parents need God’s wisdom, grace, patience, and guidance.
As I wrote, I was continually reminded of the importance of prayer and the power of God’s Word in shaping the lives of our children. I was also reminded that our teenagers ultimately belong to God, and we are called to steward the responsibility He has entrusted to us.
The process also challenged me personally to reflect on the kind of example we set for the younger generation. Teenagers do not only listen to what we say; they also observe how we live. This made me reflect more deeply on the importance of living a life that reflects Christ in our words, attitudes, relationships, and choices.
Writing the book strengthened my faith in God’s ability to work in the lives of young people. Even in a world that is changing rapidly, I believe that God is still able to raise a generation that loves Him, knows His Word, and stands firmly for biblical truth.
The experience also renewed my commitment to praying for teenagers and their families and to continue serving the younger generation through teaching, mentoring, pastoral ministry, and Christian education.
I would say that this book is for every parent who has a teenager, is preparing to enter the teenage parenting season, or desires to understand and effectively guide teenagers in today’s world.
I would also encourage grandparents, guardians, teachers, pastors, youth leaders, mentors, and anyone who works with teenagers to read it because raising the next generation is a shared responsibility.
The world our teenagers are growing up in is changing rapidly. The influences around them are powerful, and parents need to be equipped to respond with wisdom, intentionality, and biblical understanding.
This book is not written to tell parents that they must be perfect. Rather, it is written to encourage and equip them. It is a guide to help parents become more intentional in understanding their teenagers, communicating with them, nurturing their faith, setting healthy boundaries, and helping them navigate the challenges of the 21st century.
My message to parents is this: Do not give up on your teenager. Do not underestimate your influence. Your voice, your prayers, your example, and your presence matter.
The teenage years may come with challenges, but they are also an incredible opportunity to invest in the spiritual and personal development of your child. With God’s help, parents can raise teenagers who are grounded in Christ, secure in their identity, equipped to make wise choices, and prepared to influence their generation for God’s glory.
