Anxiety At Rest

What happens when uncertainty unsettles the heart and anxiety begins to take control?

Anxiety at Rest explores the search for lasting peace in a world where economic, political, social, environmental and personal circumstances can change without warning. While these forms of peace may offer temporary stability, this book points the reader towards a deeper and more enduring peace found in God.

Drawing extensively from Scripture, Margaret Macharia examines the clutters that disturb spiritual peace, including fear, bitterness, conflict, greed, pride, unforgiveness and other desires that compete for the heart. She then leads the reader through biblical keys of knowledge, wisdom, understanding and good judgement towards a personal pathway of awakening, conviction, confession, repentance and reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ.

This is more than a book about escaping difficult circumstances. It is an invitation to discover where true rest begins. When tomorrow is uncertain, when circumstances cannot be controlled and when the heart feels overwhelmed, there is still a pathway towards peace. Anxiety does not have to have the final word. In God, the restless heart can learn to rest.

Spiritual Peace

Spiritual peace is not merely something to receive; it is something to nurture, protect and live out.

In Spiritual Peace, Margaret Macharia takes the reader beyond finding peace with God into the daily journey of growing in faith, developing spiritual discipline and living with eternity in view. Drawing from Scripture, she explores how believers can strengthen their walk with God through foresight, prayer, the Word, fellowship, worship and dependence on the Holy Spirit.

The book examines what it means to align one’s life with God, grow in Christlike character and allow spiritual peace to shape relationships, service, purpose and community. Through qualities such as love, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, compassion and humility, spiritual peace becomes more than an inward experience—it becomes a way of life.

The journey does not end with present-day peace. Believers are called to remain focused, stand firm when faith is tested and persevere towards the hope God has promised. With its emphasis on future glory, spiritual rewards and eternal life with God, Spiritual Peace encourages Christians to keep growing even through seasons of uncertainty and difficulty.

Nurture your faith. Grow in Christ. Live purposefully. Persevere in hope. And keep your heart fixed on the eternal peace that awaits in God’s presence.

“Impacting lives with Christian literature”

What inspired you to write, and what was the journey that led you to put this message into writing?

A simple but sobering observation inspired Anxiety at Rest and Spiritual Peace : we all want peace, but we often look for it in the wrong places. We talk constantly about peace: economic peace, political peace, financial security and peaceful homes. These things matter, but they are all circumstantial. They depend on things outside our control, and they can be taken away as quickly as they were gained. So, we spend our energy managing circumstances, hoping that if we can arrange enough of life correctly, peace will follow. But Jesus offered something categorically different. In John 14:27 (NIV), He tells His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” He said this hours before His arrest, before the cross and before the disciples’ world fell apart. His peace was not a reward for stable circumstances; it was a gift given in anticipation of the worst circumstances. That distinction became the foundation of this book: God’s peace was never meant to arrive after life settles down. It was given precisely because life doesn’t. I wrote this book because I once couldn’t hear God’s voice for all my own anxiety, and I don’t want anyone else to wait as long as I did to find the stillness where He speaks.

Who do you hope will benefit most from reading your books, and what encouragement or transformation do you pray they will receive?

These books are dedicated to people experiencing generalised anxiety. Within that, their heart is for a particular kind of anxious person: the believer who already knows the right doctrine and still cannot sleep. They are for the person who has learned to call their anxiety “responsibility”, quietly managing outcomes in their relationships, work and future, and calling it diligence rather than naming it for what it is: an attempt to carry a weight God never asked them to carry alone. David wrote in Psalm 55:22 (NIV), “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” My prayer is that readers will stop mistaking control for faithfulness and discover, as I had to, that resting in God is not a single decision but one they get to keep making daily. Each time they do, they will discover that peace was already there waiting; it was never something they had to produce.

Looking back at the writing process, was there a particular chapter or message that God used to speak to you personally? Why did it stand out?

The chapter that cost me the most to write was Chapter 5 in Anxiety At Rest, “Pathway to Spiritual Peace,” particularly the sections on confession, repentance and reconciliation with God. Writing it forced me to name the specific things I had been managing instead of trusting. It is one thing to teach that anxiety grows where trust is absent. It is another to sit with the realisation that I had spent years quietly trying to control outcomes in ministry, provision and timing while telling myself I was simply “being responsible.” Writing this book did not let me hide behind that language anymore. 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV) says, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” I had to admit that casting is an act, not a feeling. It is a deliberate release, repeated daily, not a one-time spiritual milestone I could check off. That lesson became deeply personal: resting in God is not a state you arrive at. It is a decision you keep making.

What was the greatest lesson God taught you through the process of writing and publishing?

The greatest lesson was this: God’s peace is a gift before it is a feeling. Most of us wait to feel peaceful before we believe we have peace. But Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV) does not describe peace simply as an emotional outcome of prayer. It describes it as a guard: “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Guarding is protective, not decorative. It is something already stationed at the door of your heart, whether or not you feel calm in a given moment. I had every reason to wonder whether this book would matter, whether it would make a difference to life today, or whether I was qualified to write it. But once I knew this peace, creating this awareness was no longer hard. Publishing the book stopped being a burden and became an act of obedience. I learnt that obedience is the decision to act while the outcome is still unresolved, trusting that the peace itself was never mine to produce, only to receive.

If you had just one minute to tell someone why they should read Anxiety at Rest and Spiritual Peace, what would you say?

Anxiety at Rest and Spiritual Peace names something you may already feel but haven’t said out loud: peace built on managing your circumstances will always be as unstable as the circumstances. This book walks you through what clutters real peace and what the pathway back to it looks like: sin awareness, confession, repentance and reconciliation with God. It also points you towards what is waiting at the end of that pathway: not just relief, but reward. Scripture calls it a crown: the crown of life for those who persevere under trial, as described in James 1:12, and victory for everyone who overcomes the world through faith in Christ, as expressed in 1 John 5:4. Jesus already secured this peace on the cross. Your work is to stop refusing it and take it up daily. Read it if you’re tired of managing your own peace. Read it if you want to experience God.

A message from Dr. Muthoni Omukhango, the National Director at CLC Kenya and Head of Publishing

When Margaret Macharia joined CLC Kenya’s writing mentorship class, she came in with a concern that many first-time authors quietly carry: she was not sure she had enough words to write. At the beginning of the fourteen-week journey, she mentioned that she did not have very much to say. Yet week by week, as she engaged with the writing process, reflected more deeply on her message and allowed the ideas God had placed within her to take shape, the words kept coming.

By the end of the fourteen weeks, Margaret had written approximately 80,000 words. There was so much material that, as publishers, we eventually had to say, “This is not one book. There are two books here.” For us, that became a testimony in itself, a reminder of what can happen when we make ourselves available and allow God to work in us and through us. What Margaret initially thought might not be enough became an abundance that needed to be carefully separated into two distinct but connected journeys.

As we worked through the manuscript, those two journeys became increasingly clear. The first was the journey of a restless heart. It began with uncertainty, the kind that makes us wonder what tomorrow will bring, whether the things we depend on will remain secure and what happens when circumstances move beyond our control. Margaret writes from the conviction that economic stability, relationships, good health, social order and other forms of external peace all have their place, but none of them can carry the full weight of the human heart.

That journey became Anxiety at Rest: The Pathway to Spiritual Peace. It follows the reader through anxiety, uncertainty, understanding, conviction, confession, repentance and reconciliation with God towards rest. But as the manuscript continued, we realised that Margaret’s message did not end when the anxious heart found rest. Another question emerged: What happens after we find peace with God?

How do we nurture our faith? How do we remain spiritually grounded when circumstances change again? How does the peace God gives begin to shape our character, our relationships, our service to others and the way we view the future? That became the heart of Spiritual Peace: Nurturing Faith and Eternal Hope.

The second book begins where the first one ends. It moves from spiritual rest into growth, foresight, discipline, alignment with God, Christlike character, relationships and service, a culture of peace, perseverance and ultimately eternal hope. What particularly struck us as publishers is that Margaret does not present peace simply as a pleasant emotion or the absence of difficulty. Throughout both books, peace is connected to our relationship with God, our response to His Word, the transforming work of the Holy Spirit and the way we live among other people.

There are seasons when we want God simply to change what is happening around us. Yet sometimes His deeper work is what He is doing within us—teaching us to trust when we cannot see ahead, surrender what we cannot control, deal honestly with what is in our hearts, grow in wisdom, serve others and remain faithful through changing seasons.

Perhaps Margaret’s own writing journey illustrates that truth beautifully. She began by wondering whether she had enough words. Fourteen weeks later, there were enough words for two books. That is more than a publishing story. It is a reminder that when we surrender what we have to God—even when it appears small—He is able to develop, multiply and use it beyond what we initially imagined.

And so these two books belong together. Anxiety at Rest is for the person asking, Where can my heart find rest? Spiritual Peace is for the person asking, How do I continue growing, living and hoping from that place of rest? Our prayer is that readers will encounter more than information about peace within these pages. May they be drawn into a deeper relationship with the God who gives peace, nurtures faith and carries His people faithfully from present uncertainty towards eternal hope. Margaret, we are proud of your journey and are happy to be in this work with you.
Congratulations and well done!
