As a young girl growing up in Kisanana, Grace Kimeli believed the hills surrounding her village marked the boundaries of the world. Life would teach her that there was much more beyond them. Beyond the Horizon traces her journey through faith, family, education, marriage, career and service, including seasons of loss, workplace challenges and unexpected opportunities. Through it all, Grace discovers how adversity can produce resilience, compassion and a desire to encourage others. Her story invites you to look beyond present limitations, recognise God’s hand in your journey, and keep moving towards the possibilities beyond your horizon. The hills before you may be real, but they do not necessarily mark the end of the road.
“Impacting lives with Christian literature”
The writing of this book was inspired by what the Lord Jesus Christ has done in my life. My background did not look like one that would lead me beyond the hills that surrounded my village, from which I had a limited view of what the world was all about. The idea was to encourage people to believe in the Lord and be assured that He holds our hands, even through the challenges and difficulties we encounter in day-to-day life. I love the song Through It All, I Have Learned to Trust in Jesus. It is such a beautiful thing to trust and wait upon the Lord and to see Him carry us through life’s issues.
The book is written for believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, especially girls, women, people determined to advance their careers, and those who may face challenges, even in the workplace. Therefore, the book will encourage both men and women. The core message of this book highlights the transformational aspects of the grace received from the Lord, including personal perseverance and growth, with an emphasis on spiritual growth and renewal. It demonstrates how, with the Lord’s help, we can overcome adversity.
Chapter Four of this book, which is about the environment—both its physical and social aspects—stood out to me. I was a very excited and inquisitive child. Even at that tender age, the hills that surrounded my village of Kisanana made me question things, especially the idea that the world ended where the hills did. But the aeroplanes that flew above my village intrigued me, especially the Jumbo jets that left a trail of smoke; we called them “Jepkotut”. Where did they come from, and where were they going? If the world ended just where the various hills ended, as far as my eyes could see, what was beyond them? From these childhood questions, Beyond the Horizon was born. My early exposure to the Christian faith also helped me think of God as the One behind creation.
This is my first book as an author. It has been an exciting journey, and I look forward to it touching lives. I remember that at the beginning of the Writing Class, Dr. Muthoni shared the perspective that our books are to be led by the Holy Spirit, writing through us as authors, and that they are God’s books through us. I was touched and realised that Almighty God alone makes my life and all I am able to do possible. His faithfulness and loving kindness endure forever. This has made me know and believe that without God, I can do nothing. I appreciate this journey of authorship. It is quietening and calls for greater prayerfulness at every step, so that God can minister through this book. I hope the book will bless many people who read it.
I strongly believe that, with the anointing of the Holy Spirit, this book will encourage readers. Indeed, people will watch and feel connected because life is life, whether in rural or urban areas, at any level, and in any occupation. The young and the old alike need to read the book for encouragement. I am confident of this because the grace of God is sufficient for them all.
Grace Kimeli had always wanted to write a book. The desire was there, but like many aspiring authors, she did not quite know how to begin or how to turn the many experiences and lessons she carried into a manuscript. Then came a simple conversation. Our Programs Coordinator, Jackline Ingasian, who was attending Grace’s church, asked her, “Have you authored a book?” She said no. “Would you love to write one?” Jackline asked. Grace’s answer connected a long-held desire with an opportunity. She later joined CLC Kenya’s Writing Mentorship Class, and what had lived in her heart for years began taking shape on paper. One lesson followed another. Memories were revisited, thoughts organised, chapters developed, and gradually, an author emerged with a manuscript in her hands.
I love stories like Grace’s because they remind me why we do what we do at CLC Kenya. Sometimes people do not lack a story. They do not lack wisdom, experience or even the desire to write. They simply need someone to help them find the starting point, provide a structure and walk with them through the process. And Grace certainly had a story to tell. One image in Beyond the Horizon particularly stayed with me: that of a little girl growing up in Kisanana, looking at the hills surrounding her village and, in her childhood understanding, imagining that they marked the boundaries of the world. There is something profoundly human about that picture. We all have horizons shaped by what we can presently see. Yet life has a way of revealing that there is often much more beyond them. There is something beautiful about reaching a season in life when we can look back, gather the fragments of our journey and recognise that even the difficult seasons have left us with something worth passing on. Writing gives us the privilege of preserving those lessons so they do not end with us. Our experiences become wisdom another person can carry forward. Grace, I am grateful that you did not allow the desire to write to remain merely a desire. You stepped into the process, allowed yourself to be mentored, persevered through the discipline of writing, and completed what you had long carried in your heart. And now, the question is no longer, “Have you authored a book?” You have. It is my honour to be your publisher and to see Beyond the Horizon move from a long-held dream, through the writing journey, and finally into the hands of readers. May this book travel far beyond the horizons you once saw as a little girl, and may it remind others that sometimes what lies between a dream and its fulfilment is simply the courage to begin. Perhaps this is your scenario too, dear reader. As you read Grace’s story, may you see the horizon beyond your current circumstances.
