True Prosperity is Founded on Security in God – A Little About A Lot

Abraham is secure in God. He knows that God is the source of his blessing and not the location where he is. You can be in a green fertile place without God and fail. However, you can also be in a wilderness that seems to be dry and deserted, but with God you prosper. The Bible shows us how Isaac sowed in a famine and reaped a hundred fold (Genesis 26:12-17). This is one of the lessons that God wanted to teach the children of Israel when He took them through the wilderness and it was that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. This means that it is God who is our sustenance and source of prosperity. It is God who gives us the power to make wealth and not just our location, contacts, hard work or academic qualifications. The Bible tells us that Lot lifted up his eyes and looked at the side of Sodom and Gomorrah and saw how fertile and green the land was. Bible says it was like the garden of Eden. This appeals to Lot and he perceives that this is a good place for him to settle. The Bible says that Lot dwelled in a city – drawn by the fertility and the security of the area around Sodom. However, he failed to see the dangers and the threats that this posed. Bible encourages us in the book of Proverbs 3:5-6,

Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].

This Scripture clearly tells us that when we are making decisions, we should not lean on our own understanding, but rather we should trust in God’s leading and guidance. Trusting in God’s guidance requires faith and surrendering our own desires and plans to Him. It may not always be easy, but it is ultimately the best way to ensure that we are making wise and beneficial decisions for our lives. Many times what looks attractive or what may appeal to our senses may actually not be good for us. This is so in the case of Lot: the area where he dwelt had so many dangers and threats. The Bible tells us that a short while later, war broke out and the people of Sodom together with their property were carried away in captivity. that he would later discover the security of Sodom. It did not take long for lot to discover that the security of Sodom was fickle and not sure. He would also soon discover that’s the culture and the people of Sodom and Gomorrah were wicked to the point where God Almighty would choose to destroy the city with fire. Lot saw the fertility of Sodom and Gomorrah, but he did not see the wickedness. He saw the security of the cities but he did not see the coming war. The Bible tells us that one of the characteristics of the world is the lust of the eyes where our eyes last for things that may seem appealing to our flesh. But the Bible also tells us that if we sow in the world then we will reap corruption. But if we sow in the spirit, we will reap life and peace. Lot sowed in the flesh and he ripped corruption, death and tragedy. In the same way, Eve in the Garden of Eden was drawn to the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and ate its fruit, the enemy caused her to be drawn to the appeal of the – it was pleasant to the eyes. However, this tree brought death not only to her but to generations to come.
